Amazingly, when the brick infill was removed, it was revealed that except for the backband the surround was almost completely intact.  Furthermore, it was discovered that the St. Bee’s sandstone surround was almost identical to the ca. 1764 Dining Room’s surround, suggesting that it actually dated to ca. 1764.  The similarities between the two surrounds led the Restoration Team to wonder if the Drawing Room's Madison-era surround could have been originally used in one of the ca. 1764 rooms that was demolished to form the Drawing Room and Entry in ca. 1812.
