Because curtain pins continued to be used into the 20th century, a historic building with a complex history of interior renovations will often feature three or more generations of pin locations.  Investigators can use the size of the impression as well as the size and width of the screw to help determine the rough age of curtain pin holes, but these physical indicators only allow for a very broad date range to be developed.
