To determine the date range of curtain pin evidence, two paint samples are needed.  The first sample is taken from on top of the evidence for the curtain pin while the second sample is taken just next to the possible pin location.  The second sample provides a complete paint history for the piece of trim.  When this paint history is compared to the first sample, any gaps or disruption in the paint chronology reveals when the pin was removed and provides an approximate date range for when the pin was mounted on the window.
