So what’s so important about these little holes to justify all of this work?  For curators the location of curtain pin holes not only reveals the physical location of the curtain pins, but also provides information on what the curtain looked like.  For instance, if the holes near the top corners of the windows in the Large Bedroom had turned out to date to President Madison’s time, then the curators would have started to research elaborate curtain designs that featured swagged drapery.  However, because the Madison-era holes are found much lower on the window trim, the resulting curtains will most likely be much simpler and reflect the room's use as a private bedroom.
