However, the railings did not survive for long after Montpelier was sold out of the Madison family and drawings from the mid-19th century show that they were removed in ca. 1848 when the wing roofs were replaced.  Unfortunately, no fragments of the railing were found during the deconstruction phase of the restoration and so the Restoration Team would instead turn to the existing physical and documentary evidence to develop a design for the reconstructed railings.
