Finally, to discover how these railings would have been constructed the Restoration Team inspected examples of existing early 19th century Chinese railings found at other sites in Virginia.  The best example was found on one of the pavilions at the University of Virginia (a building that was also designed by Thomas Jefferson).  By looking at the railing, the architects and restoration carpenters discovered how the panels were assembled, what joints were employed and what types of molding profiles to use for the top railing.
