While the physical evidence provided information on the height and size of the railing, it did not reveal what the actual railing looked like.  To recover the design of the railings, the Restoration Team undertook a search of all the known historic images of Montpelier.  Two images in particular were found that appeared to clearly show what the wing deck railings may have looked like in ca. 1812.  Unfortunately the two drawings also showed radically different designs.  The first image came from a group of drawings that were based on a lost original drawing.  Copies of the drawing clearly show a railing with four panels decorated with a pattern consisting of two large Xs with narrow, stretched hexagons inserted into the middle.
