Because so many of the ca. 1812 shutters survived, it was also possible to accurately reconstruct the hardware used by Madison’s carpenters to hang the shutters.  All of the shutters, except the ones for the Drawing Room's windows, the venetian doorway and the venetian doorway’s sidelights, were hung on strap hinges.  For the Drawing Room and venetian doorway H-L hinges were used and the venetian doorway's sidelight shutters were mounted with simple iron tabs.
