Strap hinges are hung from pintles mounted to the window or door trim.  While no pintles were found stored in the barn with the shutters, it was found that the duPonts had amazingly left many of them in place on the main block when they removed the shutters.  Because the ca. 1812 pintles as well as the almost identical ca. 1848 pintles that replaced several of the ca. 1812 pintles when Montpelier was stuccoed were in good condition, it was decided to reuse them.  While a blacksmith did have to reconstruct several new pintles,  a vast majority of the pintles currently found on the main block of the house date to either ca. 1812 or ca. 1848.
