To install the egg-and-dart composition ornament a coating of hide glue was first applied to the pediment. After the hide glue had set for five minutes the egg-and-dart moldings were applied and secured with stainless steel nails. While carpenters in the early 19th century would not have used nail guns, they would have used a similarly sized and shaped nail to help hold the ornament in place.
