Incredibly, one of the photos showed that cleats had been built into the back of the pediment.  These cleats, which helped to stabilize the pediment and keep it from warping with seasonal changes in temperature and humidity, projected out past the back of the pediment and so required pockets in the brickwork above the door at Monticello similar to the pockets found at Montpelier.  Having such clear evidence linking the surviving pediment at Monticello to the missing pediment at Montpelier helped to prove that the paint lines uncovered by the Investigation Team's excavations did in fact relate to a ca. 1812 Madison-era feature.
