With the pediment and the chimneypiece restored, the Drawing Room once again features the high level of architectural detailing that President Madison intended.  Because Madison meant for the room to serve as Montpelier's primary social space and a room where he could demonstrate his knowledge of architecture and his social status, restoring the Drawing Room's impressive archtiectural detailing was not optional.  Without these elements visitors to the house would not have been able to fully understand how President Madison used the house to illustrate the position he felt he held in both contempoary society and history.
