To install the finished pediment, the carpenters at Montpelier used the ca. 1812 brick pockets found during the initial investigation to hold wooden cleats that fit into dovetailed mortises cut into the back of the pediment.  After the cleats were installed, all the carpenters needed to do to secure the pediment in place was to gently slide it down over the cleats.  Because the cleat/dovetail system does not use any nails or screws, it will be easy to remove the pediment in the future if repairs are needed.
